Customer Advisory - August 17, 2005

This is a Customer Advisory that a new internet virus/worm is currently spreading worldwide. It is called W32.Zotob.E and has symptoms of shutting down computers, particularly those running Windows 2000. It is “network aware” meaning it will attempt to infect other computers on your network, even if it does not cause your computers to shut down. While there are thousands of worms and viruses on a regular basis, we monitor for the ones that are more likely to have a far-reaching impact.

Q: How do you get infected?
A: Connecting to unprotected networks as follows:

  1. This can be a dialup connection without running a software firewall
  2. Home Cable Modems and DSL connections often do not have a separate router. The software firewall should be run at a minimum.
  3. Wireless access points (like restaurants) should not be used without a software firewall.

We have observed cases where home-based laptops received the worm, then brought the worm into the protected network because the laptop was later connected behind the firewall.

Q: How do you reduce chances of getting infected?
A: There are several key steps:

  1. Make sure you Windows security patches are up to date.
  2. Your home and office network should be equipped with a firewall
  3. All computers should run a current Antivirus package.
  • We recommend Symantec/Norton Antivirus. Versions older than 2003 should be upgraded.
  • Virus Definitions should be current
  • The Subscription should be current. (Most infections we extract are due to expired subscriptions, since Definitions can’t be downloaded)
